Oak Hill had its top five runners finish in the top 24 in earning the runner-up spot in the Gold Division (small schools).
Senior J.C. Herring, who has been battling a knee problem, paced the Golden Eagles with a fifth-place finish (17:01.9) and just edged by .2 seconds at the finish line by Hagerstown’s Kaleb Slagle.
Hagerstown (36 points) won the event, and had runners finish second, third, fourth and eighth. Herring knew Oak Hill (68) needed every point it would get for a chance to win and finished the race with a spirited effort despite being edged out for fourth place.
“I knew we were down as a team and I just wanted to beat him to give us a chance us to win as a team,” Herring said. “We could have done better but we’re getting there.”
Golden Eagles coach Paige Brunner knew Hagerstown would be hard to beat.
“(Hagerstown) won a sectional last year and had all their guys back,” Brunner said. “I thought our first K was bad. We let Hagerstown get out there and we were chasing them the rest of the way. Not a good first K and not a good last K. We raced well in two, three and four and had some PRs, but we’ve got some young guys still trying to find their way through a crowd like that, too.
“It’s a good learning experience and I’m happy we got second.”
Tahj Johnson (17:14) finished 11th, Silas Vermilya (17:18) ran 13th, Raffi Fry (17:24) ended 15th and Julian Garcia (17:46) finished 24th for the Golden Eagles.
Madison-Grant (485) was 20th in the team race with Mason Miller (18:36.9) finishing 43rd and Joey Marshall (19:36.2) finishing 64th.
