Margo Hornocker will make the trip to the girls’ cross country state finals after the Oak Hill sophomore finished 20th overall Saturday afternoon in the semistate meet.
The Oak Hill and Eastbrook girls’ and boys’ teams and five other individual runners from Grant County failed to qualify for state at the 5-kilometer race on the Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne campus. Hornocker made it out as one of the top 10 runners from non-advancing teams.
The Eastbrook boys’s team finished 15th with 370 points. The Oak Hill girls’ team was 10th with 273 points.
“I am pretty excited, but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” Hornocker said of advancing to state.
Hornocker is the second girl in Oak Hill history and sixth in the county to advance to state individually. She is the first Oak Hill to go to state since 1992. She is the first Grant County girl to go to state since 1999.
Hornocker’s time of 19:30 was slower than her personal best 18:55 at the regional meet on the Indiana Wesleyan University course but was ninth-best among those from non-advancing teams and other individual runners.
Oak Hill’s Jenessa Hasty was 54th in 20:16. Brooke Hasty was 63rd in 20:26. Marion’s Sabrina Porter was 65th in 20:31. Mississinewa’s Amanda Baldwin was 70th in 20:39.
Chandler Julius finished 30th overall in the boys’ race in 16:43, but the Oak Hill senior missed out on the state finals by five places. Julius had the best finish among local boys’ runners.
Mississinewa’s Brennan Butche was 35th in 16:51. Marion’s Jalen Springer was 45th in 17:00. Eastbrook’s Michael Neideck was 57th in 17:11. Marion’s Adrien Howard was 60th in 17:14. Eastbrook’s Connor White was 63rd in 17:17.
The state finals girls’ race is set for 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the Wabash Valley Sports Center, Terre Haute.
