FAIRMOUNT — One streak ended while an even longer one continued at the Grant Four track meet Friday evening at Madison-Grant.

It was Oak Hill that captured both the girls and boys titles.

The Golden Eagles’ boys won 10 of the 16 events contested and scored 105 to stop Eastbrook’s three-year reign as county champion. The Panthers scored 68 points for runner-up followed by Mississinewa (44) and Madison-Grant (24).

Oak Hill’s girls continued their dominance for a 10th-straight season, but had to battle from behind to run down Eastbrook and eventually outscore the Panthers 88.5 to 76.5. Ole Miss ended with 47 and a year after scoring only 4.5 points in Grant Four, Madison-Grant won three events and scored 31 points.

“I knew Eastbrook would get on us early on the girls side,” said Oak Hill coach Paige Brunner. “I knew some of their stronger events were early and they were going to get a spread on us. We had to just maintain and hope that the distance girls would score a lot of points for us and they did.

“We were able to steal some points here and there that put us in position to have some breathing room late.”

Oak Hill’s Mollie Gamble finished first in the 1,600 and 3,200, with Kinzie Robey runner up in both events while Gamble was runner-up to Selah Jackson in the 800 to help erase the Panthers early advantage.

Taylor King won the pole vault (on Wednesday at Eastbrook and the Golden Eagles also won the 4×800 and 4×400 relays.

Eastbrook’s girls got wins from Audrey Altum (100 hurdles), Rachel Manning (high jump) and the 4×100 relay and continue to close in on ending the Golden Eagles reign.

“We did some really good things tonight and there are some things we could do a little bit better, especially on the girls side, where you could sneak a few points here or there” said Eastbrook coach Stu Goble. “We did well but we didn’t run a perfect meet and maybe we need a perfect meet to get it done.

“It’s close,” he added. “We did some good things and I’m proud of the girls, they’re competing hard and we’re getting there. It’s a pretty young team.”

The star of the girls meet was Mississinewa junior Carli Fones. Fones has yet to taste defeat in any of the Grant Four sprint races and again made it a clean sweep by taking wins in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races for the third-straight season.

The Indians also got an individual championship from senior Beth Lucas in the 300 hurdles.

Madison-Grant’s improved showing was aided by senior Payton Freel who won both the shot put and discus while freshman Azmae Turner edged Oak Hill’s Adrianna Trexler by a scant 1.75 inches to win the long jump.

Oak Hill’s boys were led by senior Sammy Sommers and junior Tahj Johnson.

Sommers and Johnson finished 1-2 in long jump, then Sommers captured the 110 and 300 hurdles and also anchored the Golden Eagles 4×100 relay win. Ryan Fernandes, Gavin Holz, Bradey Evans and Sommers set a meet record with a time of 44.29 seconds in the relay to break a record that had stood since 1984.

Like Fones, Johnson sprinted his way to 100, 200 and 400 championships and the Golden Eagles also won the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. Caiden Lake won the pole vault for Oak Hill on Wednesday at Eastbrook.

“I’m proud of the boys. I can’t think of any areas on the boys team that we weren’t good tonight,” Brunner said. “Not great in any aspect but the wind probably negated that a little bit in some of the sprinter events. Total team effort.”

Eastbrook’s Nathan Brainer won the 800 and Hayden Raikes captured the high jump.

“Boys wise, Oak Hill is really good,” Goble said. “They’re really good at what they do and sometimes when you have guys that are really good they bring a level of other people up with them, especially in the training part of it. It was their turn.”

Mississinewa’s Brennan Butche was a double winner, easily winning the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races.

Madison-Grant also got a pair of county titles from senior A.J. Jones, who won both the shot put and discus.
