All three Grant County athletes who traveled to Indianapolis to compete in the Franklin Central Showcase against the top mile runners in Indiana had more than respectable showings Friday evening.
Oak Hill junior Morgo Hornocker set a school record by covering the mile in 5:11.39, breaking the old mark set in 2013 by Shallen Leinhart. Hornocker finished third in the second of three heats that featured 65 of the top milers in Indiana. Her time placed her ninth overall in that group.
Golden Eagle freshman standout Mollie Gamble finished 17th in her heat against the top freshman runners in the state, but set a personal best by finishing the mile in 5:30.9.
“I was laughing before the race and told (Hornocker) I was hoping she would run 5:20 and she she was shooting for 5:10,” said Oak Hill track coach Paige Brunner. “This time the athlete knew better than coach. With 300 meters to go she had a chance to win her heat. I couldn’t be prouder. Mollie had a PR so it was definitely worth the trip down here.”
Mississinewa sophomore Brennan Butche was sixth in the second of four boys mile heat races, and finished 25th out of 65 competitors. The cross country all-stater ran 4:27.26, besting his previous career mark by more than nine seconds.
