LAPEL — Preston Scott hit a basket with eight seconds left as No. 2-ranked Lapel survived a valiant Oak Hill rally to beat the No. 3-ranked Eagles 52-51 to win the Class 2A Boys’ Basketball Regional on Saturday.
Lapel had a 46-30 lead in the fourth quarter and Oak Hill went on a 22-5 run to take a 52-51 lead with 20 seconds left. Scott hit a layup to put the Bulldogs up 52-51 with eight seconds left and Oak Hill missed a shot as the horn sounded.
“I could not be prouder of a group of kids,” Oak Hill coach Kevin Renbarger said. “Down 16 against a team like Lapel, not many teams can do what we did. We stayed the course and did a great job to take the lead.”
Christian Livingston led Oak Hill with 17 points. Reese Metzger had 12 points and Spencer Ballinger had 10 points. Oak Hill finished 23-4 and Lapel improved to 24-4.
Lapel had a 46-30 lead in the fourth quarter before Oak Hill went on a 9-4 run and cut the lead to 50-39 after Livingston’s 3-pointer with 3:10 remaining, forcing Lapel to call a timeout. Coming off the timeout, Oak Hill forced a Lapel turnover and Metzger hit a basket to bring the Eagles within 50-41 with 2:25 remaining.
After another Lapel turnover, Livingston hit a 3-pointer to bring the Eagles within 50-44 with 2:04 left. Metzger hit two free throws to bring Oak Hill within 50-46 with 1:50 left. Metzger hit a layup to bring Oak Hill within 50-48 with 1:30 remaining. The Eagles forced another Bulldog turnover to get the ball back with 37 seconds left.
Ballinger hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to give the Eagles a 51-50 lead. The Bulldogs brought the ball back down the court and Scott hit a layup to put the Bulldogs up 52-51. The Eagles had a good look at the basket at the buzzer but missed.
Lapel outscored Oak Hill 11-5 in the third quarter to take a 38-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
Caleb Middlesworth hit a basket to get Oak Hill within 27-24 to open the second half. Lapel scored 11 straight points to take a 38-24 lead after Jon Ross Richardson’s rebound basket. Ballinger’s basket finally broke the Bulldog string and brought the Eagles within 12 points headed into the fourth quarter.
Oak Hill led 14-12 after the first quarter but was outscored 15-6 in the second quarter to head into halftime down 27-22.
With the game tied 16-16, Lapel went on a 7-4 run to take a 23-20 lead after Brady Smith’s rebound basket. Livingston hit a basket to bring Oak Hill within 23-22 before Lapel scored the final four points of the half and Harrington hit a jumper at the buzzer to put the Bulldogs up 27-22.
Oak Hill jumped to a 7-3 lead after Chandler Julius’ 3-pointer. Lapel scored six straight points to take a 9-7 lead before Livingston scored five straight points to give Oak Hill a 12-9 lead. Austin Lyons hit a 3-pointer to tie the game 12-12 and Livingston hit a basket to put Oak Hill up after the first quarter.
