For the first time in school history, Oak Hill has a regional diving champion.

Senior Caiden Lake, a 2018 state diving finalist, authored that piece of history in the Fishers Diving Regional on Tuesday night and will head to the IUPUI Natatorium on Saturday morning looking for more hardware in the state diving championships.

“I think the spectrum is not going to be as overwhelming for him going there,” said Oak Hill diving coach Bobby Hart by phone on Tuesday night. “Also going through the regional and zones and going to Atlanta for nationals in (USA Diving), he’s been on a bigger spectrum. I think that experience…and now he’s a sectional champ and regional champ, I don’t think he’s going to be nervous.”

Lake scored 99 points with his first two dives and led the competition from start to finish

“His first five (dive) were solid,” Hart said. “He left a few points on the board…but he was leading after the first five and had a commanding lead of 15 points after the first eight. Samuel Bennett (Delta) poured i on in the last rounds and almost caught Caiden, but he held on.”

Lake finished with 484.05 points and edged Bennett (481.35) for the championship.

Hart said Lake’s preparations for Tuesday night and Saturday started about three hours after he wrapped up his first trip to state last February.

“It’s just an amazing feeling when you have a kid that worked so hard,” Hart said. “He’s worked since state last year, he started putting in the time…That’s why right now he is sectional champ and regional champ at Oak Hill. I’m a proud, proud coach.”

Diving preliminaries start at 9:00am with the semifinals to follow on Saturday in Indianapolis. The finals in all events start at 1 pm.

Admission is $8.
