Oak Hill senior Caiden Lake took the first step towards returning to the state championship diving competition on Saturday by capturing the sectional championship at Hamilton Southeastern.

Lake amassed a score of 395.95 through the semifinals but slightly trailed HSE senior Nathan Barr’s 367.95.

But Lake put together a strong set of dives to finish with 503.65 to overtake Barr (498.85).

Lake moves on to the Fishers Diving Regional on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Admission is $5.

A top eight-finish by Lake would ensure a return trip to the state finals on Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Oak Hill’s 200 medley relay team of Dalton Scheffer, Blake LeFavour, Arik Gamble and Samuel Boyer finished fourth while the 400 freestyle relay team of Griffin Overmyer, Benjamin Martin, Colin Harts and Macallister Cheek was sixth.

Marion’s 400 free relay team of Henrique Samorini, Joel Barnes, Zach Stephens and Joseph Powell finished seventh. Samorini, Powell, Jonathan Reynolds and Tyler Morgan finished sixth in the 200 free relay.

Gamble finished seventh in the 200 IM for Oak Hill. Boyer was sixth in the 50 free and Scheffer was seventh in the 500 free.

Hamilton Southeastern won with 547 points. The Golden Eagles scored 222 points and finished fourth. The Giants ended seventh with 98 points
