Senior Vijay Blackmon reached double figures in three games while helping the Marion boys’ basketball team win its first sectional title since 2009. Senior Christian Livingston scored 29 points in the championship game while helping the Oak Hill boys’ basketball team to its second straight sectional championship.
For those honors, Blackmon and Livingston have been named this week’s Chronicle-Tribune Athletes of the Week.
Blackmon combined to score 52 points in Marion’s three sectional wins.
The Giant senior scored 15 points in Marion’s 80-41 victory over Blackford. Along with his points, Blackmon also had two rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Blackmon then had a game-high 24 points while helping Marion beat Hamilton Heights 74-67 in the sectional semifinals. Blackmon had his 24 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-9 effort from 3-point range. Blackmon also had five rebounds, five assists and one steal in the victory.
Blackmon then had 13 points in Marion’s 74-69 overtime victory against Tipton in Saturday night’s championship game. Blackmon also had three rebounds, three assists and one steal in the victory.
Marion trailed Tipton 39-27 at halftime. The Giants outscored the Blue Devils 26-14 in the third quarter to tie the game 53-53 headed into the fourth quarter. Both teams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and Marion outscored Tipton 10-5 in the overtime.
“We just never gave up,” Blackmon said. “Tipton probably played the best half they have all year in the first half and we played our worst. But in the second half and overtime, we just turned things around.”
Blackmon averages 17.8 points for the Giants. Marion hosts Columbia City 10 a.m. Saturday in the regional at the Bill Green Athletic Arena.
Livingston scored a game-high 29 points as the Eagles defeated Southwood 69-53 in Saturday’s championship game at Manchester. Oak Hill led Southwood 20-16 after the first quarter and outscored Southwood 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 41-27 lead into halftime. Oak Hill then outscored Southwood 17-13 in the third quarter to take a 58-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Livingston scored his 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. He was 5-for-10 from the 3-point line. Along with his points, Livingston also had two rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Livingston scored 16 points as Oak Hill defeated Northfield 58-39 in the sectional semifinals on Friday night. Along with his points, Livingston also had two rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Livingston scored six points as Oak Hill defeated Rochester 61-23 in the opening round of the sectional. Livingston also had three rebounds, four assists and four steals in the victory.
Livingston averages 12.8 points per game. He also averages 2.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
Oak Hill plays in the regional at Lapel 10:30 a.m. Saturday against Covington.
