ELWOOD — A 16-0 run to start the game and 29-6 edge at the end of the first quarter afforded Oak Hill’s second-ranked girls basketball team the opportunity to rest starters, give additional minutes to backup players and build depth for more important missions to come.

The Golden Eagles accomplished all the above and eased to a 65-23 victory over Elwood on Friday night, improving to 9-1 while earning their second Central Indiana Conference win in convincing fashion.

“When you get an opportunity to play some other kids and build some depth, you’ve got to take advantage of the opportunity,” Oak Hill coach Todd Law.

Oak Hill’s superiority in size, speed and strength was evident from the start.

The Golden Eagles were on the scoreboard just five seconds into the game, and needed just over two minutes to build that 16-0 lead. It was 22-2 five minutes in, and a 16-2 edge in the second stanza — when the Golden Eagles scored the final 16 points — made it 45-8 at halftime.

Elwood (2-8 overall, 0-1 CIC) kept things much closer in the second half, being outscored only 20-15.

The Golden Eagles limited the Panthers to just 9-of-37 (24 percent) from the field and forced 27 turnovers.

Oak Hill’s inside duo of Taylor Westgate and Adrianna Trexler dominated in the first half before playing sparingly in the second. Each scored 12 points to lead the Golden Eagles’ offense. Abby Shaw and Kaela Robey were next with nine. Brittany McCorkle, Andrea Wilk and Marissa Wilk each scored four, and Coleena Selleck and Lexi Carmichael had two apiece.

Trexler pulled down nine rebounds while Westgate added seven and Andrea Wilk had five to lead a 36-19 rebounding advatage for Oak Hill. Trexler also blocked four shot while Jenessa Hasty collected five steals.

The Golden Eagles next host Lewis Cass on Tuesday.
