Rene Spaulding and Keegan Scott C-T Athletes Of The Week

Junior forward Rene Spaulding helped the Oak Hill girls’ basketball team win a pair of games last week.

Sophomore Keegan Scott picked up four wins, three of those by pin, for the Oak Hill wrestling team last week.

For those efforts, Spaulding and Scott have been named this week’s Chronicle-Tribune Athletes of the Week.

Spaulding combined for 30 points and 16 rebounds while helping the Eagles to a perfect 2-0 week. Spaulding opened the week with 12 points and five rebounds in the Eagles’ 62-28 victory over Maconaquah on Tuesday. She followed that up with a double-double effort of 18 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday’s 67-24 victory over Mississinewa.

Along with the points and rebounds, Spaulding also had one assist and two steals in the win over Maconaquah. She had two steals in the win over Mississinewa.

Spaulding had 12 points in the second half in Saturday’s victory. With Oak Hill leading 52-19 after the third quarter, Spaulding scored four points as the Eagles opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 57-19 lead.

“That is something that Rene is very capable of,” Oak Hill coach Todd Law said.

Spaulding finished Saturday’s game 6-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.

For the season, Spaulding is averaging 13.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She also is averaging 1.4 steals a contest.

Spaulding and her Eagle teammates will play Wabash tonight.

Scott picked up the 220-pound championship during the Eastbrook Invitational on Saturday. He won two matches by pin and another by decision.

Scott opened the invitational by pinning Bryant Miller from Wabash in 3:44. He followed that with a 9-7 decision win over Daniel Phifer from Tipton. Scott finished the invitational by pinning Western’s Dante Graham in 1:40.

Helped by Scott’s performance, Oak Hill placed second with 214 points. Western won the invitational with 255 points.

Saturday was Scott’s second strong performance at an invitational this season. He was 4-1 at 220 pounds during the Huntington Dual Meet Invitational on Dec. 1.

Scott opened this week by picking up a win by pin in Oak Hill’s 39-30 win over Frankton on Thursday. Scott pinned Frankton’s Colton Waymire in 53 seconds.
